Lamb Faucet - Soft Sung Song VI

How The Beatles Cheater Their Success, formerly known as one half of De Blimp, has become the artist’s primary project. Disappointing, as Dave without De Blimp is like Zappa without the Mothers of Invention. Soft Sung Song VI, released September 23, 2022, was the first album that wasn’t released in a short burst of horny teenage angst and boredom while recording major De Blimp albums.

To say the production is the main flaw of Soft Sung Song VI would be a cheap talking point for the review. It’s not mixed, it was made in six day, and it sucks. There, I said it, now let’s move on. The main problems stem from the composition. The zany, experimental songwriting is still present, though it’s unhinged and unrefined. Choke on Musket Smoke has plenty of good ideas, but jumps between them jarringly. Roman Mosque’s zany whistles and beat are just Talking Heads without the catchiness. There’s too much filler; what was Dave thinking with tracks such as I Hate Music and There's Only Two Kinds of People; Those Who Milk and Those Who Get Milked, the latter being a guilty pleasure, thanks to its foley instrumentation.

Undeniably, there are some fucking bangers. King Doghouse Book is a fine take on Tom Waitt’s “insert top tier Waitt song here’s“ soundscape. The intricate blend of instrumentation is bizarre, yet oddly enticing. Dave’s vocals are at the top of their game; the true selling point of Soft Shit Songs VI. Rainbow Tunnel and The Mill on the Hill both have catchy choruses, though like everyone other song on the tracklisting, barely scrapes 2-minutes. The Old Silk Road (Nuclear Bombs on Mars), on the other hand, boasts some rocking verses amidst a cheesy chorus. Papa's New Experimental Basement Captive is funny, despite sounding rough and rushed.

My advice to Dave would be to accumulate his good tracks from these sessions and release an album when he has more than enough “good” music. This isn’t fair of me to say, since I haven’t heard his previous releases, though after listening to SSSVI, I’m intrigued. If only they weren’t all covered in layer of crusty semen and cheese dust.

Good (I guess)
