Chromedealer – Chromedealer

Chromedealer is an experimental breakcore artist from New York, New York. What sets apart Chromedealer from similarly styled IDM producers is his immaculate implementation of acoustic samples and his admirable sense of progression. Easily accessible without relying on repetition, Chromedealer’s self-title is an impressive debut.

Aiia opens the album with slick beats and a rich, vibrant soundscape. Throughout the track are many experimental “moments” that make the track standout from the over-saturated IDM market. I See Chrome in The Future is glitchier, yet more iridescent and equipped with an incredibly fluent progression. The darker tones towards the end are exceptionally vibrant, as is the song’s use of space. In retrospect, 7oix is fairly more conventional that the opening two tracks, though blends in well with the track listing. Stop the Clocks’ arrangements change tempo so fluently, it’s a marvel to analyse. The song almost becomes unrecognisable towards the end, and the journey to it is bizarre and genius. Sadly, Third Sun and No Soul are disposable, and don’t offer as much virtuoso as the standout tracks.

Chromedealer’s self-title is a solid debut. His pieces work both for background music (mood enhancers) and dedicated listening sessions. It may contain a small portion of fluff, though the album is greatly bolstered by the strength of its standout tracks. Sadly, its final third is quite dull, and drags the album out unnecessarily so. If Chromedealer can trim the fat on his next release, he’ll certainly rock the IDM scene further. If his latest releases are anything to go by, there’s very little doubt he will.
