Gravitation – Gravitation EP

Graviation is an experimental ambient math rock producer from Sapporo, Japan. His works belnd the realm of rock, jazz, psychedelia, math rock and ambience. While his debut EP suffers from substandard production, his compositional skills certainly make up for it.

Paradise starts of rather plainly, though diverts into a fascinating, charming soundscape that’s both reminiscent of post-hardcore and early prog rock. The song stands strongly on its own, though the following EP is not on the same level of quality. Math Class is a relatively straight-forward math-rock suite, marred by poor midi instrumentation. Beacon pairs post-hardcore lusciously with warm orchestra; had the album been composed of live instrumentation, it could have been a true marvel. The song flows well into Ambience, which clichély ends the album with meaningless air.

Graviation’s Gravitation EP is brilliant composed, just ordinarily mastered. The compositions are full of life and excellent ideas, though the production doesn’t quite match the composer at play. The limitation of midi demonstrates that without the timbre of acoustic instrumentation, music sounds lifeless, regardless of how well composed the work is. Moreover, while half the EP has gorgeous sections, the remaining half is relatively straight forward, composed of standard Don Cabellero-esque riffs and limited ambience. Here’s hoping Gravitation will strengthen his foundations before the next release.
