Eoin Lyness – Reflections

Bad

Eoin Lyness is an ambient producer from Banbridge, UK. After a long period of radio silence, the artist remerged on December the 17th, 2021, with a disappointing follow-up to Isolation Tapes.

The opener is the clear standout on Reflections. Reflections I opens the album mysteriously, though within familiar territory. The light, nylon strumming throughout is the perfect pair to the omnious environment. Unfortunately, it’s mostly downhill from there. Stasis fluffs about, and Reflections II is unbearably long and monotonous. An acoustic piano and chirping birds give some life to Temporal I, but it’s mostly fluff right through to Temporal II. As if the album weren’t already baron of ideas, Reflection III presents straight muffled sounds for an unwarrantable ten minutes straight. The album continues the trend of mediocrity for an additional 25 minutes with the final two tracks, Fractal and Reflections IV, which contain less new ideas than my reviews centred around ambient artists.

As always, it’s a lack of innovation that prevents Eoin Lyness from reaching new heights. Sadly, this time round, there’s an unjustifiable amount of fluff to pair. While Reflections boasts some of his strongest compositions, most of the track listing sounds far too similar to the competition. Furthermore, the majority of compositions are quite predictable and painfully uneventful. Here’s hoping Eoin spends more time cultivating a new sound instead of recycling an old one.
