Psychedelic Source Records - As Wind Blew Through Peaks And Rivers

Released on December 12th, 2021, by Psychedelic Source Records was a dazzling venture into familiar territories. The album was comprised of three lengthy suites titled sequentially; regardless of their lack of innovation, there were plenty of creative and memorable moments.

The album doesn’t hold back any punches right from the get-go with 1. What immediately stands out is the crisp, clear production; an admirable quality despite being a live album. Notwithstanding a lengthy suite, there’s hardly any fluffing about; each note is not only with precision, but intention. The drums get progressively crazier as the riffs cut through; just when you think the song has climaxed, it reveals another surprise. The same could be said for the closing song, 3, which tremendously amps up its energy until its chill, yet fitting finale.

2, in contrast, is less spectacular, yet similarly eventful. Its focus is less on the composition and more on the psychedelia/atmosphere. Sadly, its sound design is not unique, and there’s a fair bit of noodling throughout. Despite being a 15-minute song, it’s far less memorable than the surrounding tracks, and drags the overall experience down.

While prog-rock albums may have been cooler in the 60’s/70’s, good music is timeless, and just as enjoyable today. As Wind Blew Through Peaks And Rivers is a commendable record, and while there are albums I’d rate higher than it, there’s very few bands I’d rather see live. The execution is phenomenal, as is the overall ambience. One can only hope they play outside my garden in future. Check them out below.
