Deathsyrup - in my dream, you were dead.

In my dream, you were dead., released on April 7th 2022 by Deathsyrup, was another disappointing plunderphonics album that clogged the scene.

The album opens with a genuine acoustic piano piece; one you would expect before a dramatic death metal album of sorts. Unfortunately, the second song drag me to hell slows it all down with boring downtempo beats and substandard vapourwave. Moreover, boring ambient plagues the album, such as on the empty soundscapes of stalking insanity ~dredged by deathsyrup, the waste-of-space in confinement room & women in box ~dredged by deathsyrup, as well as the dreadful straight-vapourwave piece in my dream, you were dead. While the pieces are eloquently composed, they’re lacking in flavour and originality. Turpentine, acetone, and benzine~ is yet another ambient piece, though honestly its somewhat alluring. The new smoking by muzak efron ~slowed + reverb is the only song of interest. Its progression, as well as its infusion of alternative rock, is quite impressive. There’s also The only church I attend is the devil on my shoulder; it may be unoriginal, but its off-beat composition and jittery insertion of vocals is quite enjoyable. If only the entire album took the same approach as The New Smoking; instead, it dwells in dull ambient soundscapes too often.

When the artists tackles an original idea, they greatly succeed. It’s a shame they don’t do it often. Here’s hoping they do so on their next release.
