Lion Trail - Through The Spirit Plains

Lion Trail sparks the question of “how can bedroom punk sound this good?” on Through The Spirit Plains. Released on February 22nd, 2022, the album blends hard-rock, stoner, folk, sludge, doom and classic metal into one megalithic track-listing.

There are moments of brilliance throughout the album, such as the solid sax which dominates the soundscape in the second half of In A Search For The Divine. Additionally, there’s a trumpet on the second half of Nothing More, No One Else that’s as rocking as it is comedic. The vocals are insane on The Cave (Where Spirits Hide), as well as on Skulls N Bones and That Moment (I've Seen It All). When the focus shifts away from the vocals and more on onto the instrumentals, it kicks an equal amount of ass, such as during Hold My Hand (And Never Let Go) and the closing moments of the album. In Our Mind is the closest thing that comes to filler, though even it’s guitar shreds are admirable.

Most of the album is a retread of its influences, though this is hardly a hindrance to the enjoyability, as the performance is stunning and the production miraculous. Knowing the album is a solo effort makes it that much more enjoyable. Both a labour of love to the genres that inspired it, and a rocking album that stands on its own, Through The Spirit Plains is a pleasant surprise from Lion Trail.
