Cyra Wirth - One Cold Autumn Evening

In my review of Cyra Wirth’s debut, Ivy EP, I wrote “one can hope in future the producer expands his catalogue of influences and creates something a little less accessible and a little more expressive.” In her latest EP, One Cold Autumn Evening, released 30th September, 2022, it’s evident the artist has hardly broadened his influences. Her songwriting has vastly improved, though the EP is a mixed bag.

Despite relying on electronically manipulated vocals, the vox is awesome. It perfectly balances the cold, mystical soundscape similar to Purity Ring’s first two albums. The title track is smooth, and enticing, whereas the second track There It Is is incredibly catchy and captivating. The EP is severely dragged down by Down Low, a throwaway B-side that sounds more like an experiment than anything else. Lastly, Lovelust isn’t as long or impressive as the opening two tracks, and makes for a disappointing closer.

One Cold Autumn Evening honestly would have scored much higher if it were just the opening two tracks. The seamless blend of acoustics and electronica is smooth and delightful. Despite lacking innovation, it makes me keen to hear the artist’s next output. Let’s hope the next output is more consistent.
