Bigger Boot - A Fork or My Fingers

A Fork or My Fingers is a seamless blend of alternative rock, lo-fi, emo, noise pop and happy hardcore. Released June 16th, 2022, it was a beautiful, yet flawed record.

The strongest element of A Fork or My Fingers is undeniably the instrumentation. Whether it’s fantastically toying with synthetics amidst jaunt acoustic elements on Daze In/Daze Out, focusing on maniacal electrical soundscapes on Slacker! (Reprise), expanding into comedy rock opera on Home? Invading, or taking a softer singer-songwriter approach on IFO; the album is constantly switching it up. Moreover, the compositions themselves are varied and vibrant, comprised of a wonderful selection of instrumentation ranging from electric guitars to fisher-price xylophones. Each track is full of surprises at every verse, and each song is distinct and memorable. There are no weak songs on this album. A Fork or My Fingers is only dragged down by its production; at times, its DIY sound gets in the way of itself. That’s not to say the recording environment is the problem; the bedroom sound is astonishing. It’s the lack of mixing; when the soundscapes get cluttered, they get muddy, and electronic sounds are difficult to differentiate. Thankfully, the amalgamating wish-wash of sounds still deliver an impeccable environment; though if it were visual, it’d be blurry.

Where it lacks in technical proficiency, it makes up for in heart and spirit. A rare album that takes multiple tacky genres and cultivates something youthful and delightfully inventive out of them. Be a fan of it while it still has the little support it does, so you can say you knew Bigger Boot before he was cool.
