The Lanterns – The Moon & the Yew Tree

The Lanterns, from Dayton, Ohio, is one of the most impressive folk artists in the underground scene. His debut, The Moon & the Yew Tree, is unfortunately not a strong starting point for the artist, though it’s an interesting view into Mikel’s psyche.

You’ll Become the Bog Wraith is a gentle opener. Sadly, the warm atmosphere isn’t enough to carry the song, though, as it lacks character. Gorgeous outro, nonetheless. Borderline Psycho Child also presents an admirable outro, as well as some heartfelt lyrics, though the song can’t help sounding formulaic and bland. Lyrics can’t carry Lonely Strangers, (a song that barely holds ones’ attention with its dull chord progression), nor can the Lo-fi samples carry A Delay of Thoughts. The Window stands out solely due to its immaculent atmosphere. It’s a shame the song is so short and the progression lacking, because it’s enchanting throughout. The closer also captures this gorgeous atmosphere quite well; both these songs are a standout. Remaining songs, such as Ishmael, Ishmael and Wet Cassette Tapes, are interesting for a one-time listen, but no more than that.

It’s difficult to recommend The Moon & the Yew Tree – even for a fan of the Lanterns. While it’s an interesting showcase of the artist’s early days, it bears no resemblance to Mikel’s great later works. While the lyrics are heartfelt and encapsulating, the instrumentation is far too basic to warrant attention. It’d be interesting to see The Lanterns revisit these songs in live shows in future, though until then, you’re better off listening to his more recent output.
