Gazers - Nightmare Vision

Nightmare Vision was released May 4th, 2022, by Gazers independently on Bandcamp. The album masterfully blended the realms of dark jazz, classical, dnb, new-wave and prog rock, and it was a vast improvement over previous releases.

The album doesn’t waste any time with The Guild; a song that skilfully combines all the album’s preceding elements into a megalithic prog-rock track. Panic Machine I delves deep into music concrete, introducing shrieking guitars and shifting soundscapes, before its keys take reign over a compelling dnb beat. There’s even more dnb experimentation on Sun; a track that sadly doesn’t venture outside its base genre too much, though greatly succeeds at infusing prog-rock. The same could be said for Moon. Deep Wave is another standout dnb track with its dense and absorbing soundscape. Mathrock shines throughout Home, before it takes a dark indie-rock approach a la The Church’s Magician Among Secrets, and swiftly returns to its original form. The same chill-wave Mathrock elements return on Tension. Erguriz sounds like a modern Phish song spliced with REM, as is the same time on the incredible closer Omega.

Nightmare Vision is not only a compelling album made by skilled musicians, but enthusiasts who are well versed in multiple genres. Their production has also significantly improved; amicably balanced and well rounded. Grazers have finally found their groove on Nightmare Vision; they’ve wisely swapped disco out for dnb, and bumped up all aspects of their writing and execution. A truly remarkable album.
