Solar Flare And Her Trio Of Sheep - Queen Of The Flock

It may only be 15 minutes in length, but Queen of the Flock, released January 21st, 2022, is an incredible delight. Solar Flare And Her Trio Of Sheep have released a flawed, yet impressive EP.

The songwriting on Queen of the Flock is genius. There’s a theatrical element to the work, which admirably blends black/doom-metaL, grind core, ska, jazz, nu-metal, avant-garde and opera. Most impressive is how fluently the album progresses through these elements seamlessly, without feeling like a bunch of incoherent ideas stitched together. Furthermore, the humour is admirable – the lyric “I’m singing Latin, but I don’t know the words” is a taste of its brilliant satire. This is essentially Phish and Zappa on crack, with a different palate of instrumentals.

Queen Of The Flock’s greatest weakness is easily its production. This is a rare circumstance where a poor mix hinders the overall experience. Additionally, the ambient fluff on the tail ends of the EP are truly unnecessary. Regardless, the composition of Clusterflock certainly makes up for it. Needless to say, if the band can address this issue on their next release (and deliver a longer album equally in quality), they’ll soar.
