Genus Inkasso, Lobster Zorn - Gilz

Released August 27th, 2013, Gilz is a mixtape by Genus Inkasso and Lobster Zorn. The two sides of the tape are wildly different: one focusing on beats and atmosphere, while the other focusing on hardcore punk and IDM. It’s a mixed bag, though its highs are damn high.

The album opens with a barrage of sounds that are both incoherent, and nonsensical. Melody begins to emerge on Tinkes with Transparent Script, in which fragmented dnb elements break through the otherwise standard synth fare. The layering is fascinating, however; while the overall sound design is nothing flash, the progression is consistently engaging. Autumn Juvenilla is not as impressive, as its focuses on ambience negates the previously impressive compositional developments. The production is top notch, though; the soundscape is very impressive, albeit substanceless. The EP takes a stark tonal shift on Lobster Zorn’s half, starting with the hardcore punk-rock anthem Wild Desert Night. While the structure and tone are unabashedly similar to everything else in the genre, St. Prayer is remarkable in its experimental idm fusion. Fat is just as impressive. Needless to say, had the remaining album matched these tracks’ ferocious tone, energy, and stature, it could have been a landmark record.

It's honestly bizarre that Genus Inkasso’s tracks took precedent in the first half of this album; they would have worked much better in the second half. Or perhaps, not at all. Regardless, had the two artists tried to fuse the two styles together, they could have created an even more phenomenal record. Nonetheless, it’s a neat package, and a great introduction to both artists.
