Form/Void - The House in the Black Noise

Form/Void are a black metal band from Baltimore, Maryland. In the House in the Black Noise is a concept album based on The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. Fluently blending doom metal and acoustics, Form/Void often exceed at creating beautiful atmospheric black metal.

Last of the Ancient Race contains some standard screamo, but beautiful instrumentals and gorgeous keys. The end instrumentals flow fluently into Waters of the Tarn, an exquisite moody piece. The methodical drumming is gorgeous, and the use of space admirable; the track beautifully flows into the next track once again. Unnatural Affliction is a beautiful detour into folk-rock; while not entirely original in this domain of music, the execution is short and effective. Sonically, Below the Surface of the Earth (Her Entombment) has some lush instrumentals, though composition-wise suffers from sticking too close to doom-metal conventions. Like the preceding songs, the track beautifully transitions to the last song with an enjoyable ambient prelude wedged in between (Her Decease). The Rising Tempest ends the album gracefully outside the mediocre opening screamo section. Midway through a beautiful crescendo masterfully explodes into a powerful requiem that tapers off the album quite beautifully.

When Form/Void let the instrumentals breath, they excel. Sadly, the band falls on conventions often throughout the album, which only lets the album blend in with the competition. Moreover, the first half of the EP is much higher quality than the second half. The album does contain more incredible sections than not; at such a short EP length, Iā€™d highly recommend checking it out.
