Eoin Lyness – Isolation Tapes

Eoin Lyness is an ambient producer from Banbridge, North Ireland. Isolation Tapes, according to Eoin, is an aural diary of lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic. The album is consisted of two long movements that work both as muzak and dedicated listening.

One major drawback of manipulated field recordings is a lack of cohesion; very often ambience and abstract recordings sound more like a collage than an evolving, thoughtful composition. Moreover, many artists tend to display field recordings without any artistic flair, as if the substance-less pieces were a statement on their own. What makes Isolation Tapes so admirable is its ability to avoid those conventional pitfalls; the tracks have an alluring, innovative stream of consciousness that tie them together. Throughout the tape it’s difficult to discern where a section begins and ends - the transitions are as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Furthermore, the soundscapes are lively and vibrant.

Whereas many ambient pieces make time go slow, Isolation Tapes makes time stop; as if to smell the roses. Though Isolation Tapes is no celebration of life; there’s a haunting theme that accompanies these tracks, as if it were the coalescing manifestation of Eoin’s loneliness and eagerness to go back outside. Instead, he’s stuck inside - and I urge you to join him for a little while.
