Sun is Poison – Rodeo Abandoned by God

Sun is Poison, first name Will, is a solo artist from Ballston Spa, New York. His jams carry the traditional lo-fi garage rock spirit of early Car Seat Headrest, though his talents are more admirable, his production tighter, and his range much wider. His jams are so lustrous and well executed they may trick you into believing this isn’t a solo project.

Success is God serenely opens the album with heartfelt guitars and warm strings. Spit contains a catchy hook and some beautiful abrasive guitars. You Are On The Fastest Possible Route has an interesting mix of acoustics, electronic guitars and electronics with a beautiful instrumental section. Much could be said about Black Metal. Bland pop-punk conventions almost detract from the lush instrumentals of Fake Choir; thankfully the mix of folk-rock and indie rock blend elegantly. To Shove suffers from a relatively straight-forward composition and repeated ideas. The track marks an abject decline in quality for the rest of the album, with an exception of A Handful of Termites; the spatial utilisation of guitars gives the song noteworthy charm. While Sinner’s Game and “Why, I Never” both boast beautiful melodies, they are rather simple. In Passanger borderlines on pop-punk and sounds somewhat overdone and cheesy. Yorick is a fine ending to the album, though nothing that hasn’t been done before.

Rodeo Abandoned By God’s major flaw is it’s simplicity. The heart, passion and harmonies are all there, though the album could have expanded upon many of its ideas. In essence, the album doesn’t necessarily have any flaws, it just has little to distance itself from the competition.
