Plum Wooer – Plume Ruiner

Plum Wooer, an Austin-based solo artist from Texas, USA, released Plume Ruiner on July 22nd, 2021. The quarantine album was bolstered with the help of a small array of artists, though was developed by one. The result was enjoyable, albeit unoriginal.

Many songs, such as Contemporary Poetics, are undeniably enjoyable. There’s a solid upbeat vibe consistent through Plume Ruiner that always stays true, even when the sounds explore different ranges, such as Mirrors & Doors. There’s a whimsical and humerous tone throughout The Opposite of Dodging a Bullet which exceeds above others due to its zany intersections. Girlfriend Summoning Ritual sounds like it was made by playing a 4/4 beat on loop and keying in incohesive midis for the sake of it; only in the final 45 seconds does it experiment more with its sound design, though it’s once again marred by the pop that preceded it. There are many other similar songs, such as Way Down and Hedonic Damage, that don’t truly open up until their instruments flourish

Plume Ruiner is a solid album that simply holds back expression in lieu of pop conventions. In other words, the style and instrumentation have plenty of flair; the compositions themselves are just generic. The album is indisputably enjoyable, though; its vibe will be enough to please any casual listener. For enthusiasts, it won’t suffice, though; one can only hope Plum Wooer’s next effort is more adventurous.
