Quailewds – 100 years

Quailewds 100 years was released on November 11th, 2021.

Sparrow opens the album in a lighthearted, summer-like fashion. The vocals are inconsistent, going sharp unnecessarily, though generally speaking holding its long notes well.  The drum patterns are quite good, though can’t help sound midi-like. What’s most impressive is the progression into jammy second section, especially as it outros. Closed Doors instantly loses the vibe in lieu of a more explosive suite that’s both less original and less captivating. The performance is far better on Reach, though the vocals are too dominant throughout the track, barely giving the vocals room to breath. Sadly, the track results in being a vehicle for the vocalist to shout meaningless personal lyrics. Lastly, while the closer repeats the errors of the two preceding tracks, its solid mixing and solid outro make up for it.

Despite its solid production and admirable performance, all is meaningless since it’s completely devoid of originality and the compositions are textbook. One would complain if this was being made in the early 2010’s, yet alone the current year. Psych rock once had its time and place, though in the age of electronics it’s insultingly boring and lazy. Overall, 100 years is a very disappointing debut.
