Osker Wyld - I

I is a compilation of improvisations recorded between 2014 and 2017 by Osker Wyld. Released on March 15, 2017, the album was a simple, yet calming collection of pieces that complimented each other despite their loose structures.

The improvisational element is the main aspect of I that prevents it from achieving greatness. There are many moments where songs trail off anti-climatically, or on the other side of the spectrum they fluff about without purpose. In essence, this adds to the overall whimsical nature of the album but detracts one on a dedicated listen. Furthermore. it works nicely as background music, as long as one doesn’t mind how little variation there is throughout.

What’s most impressive about Osker Wyld’s debut is the consistency of performances; all tracks are of equal quality. Had these compositions been expanded upon, they would have made for a delightful New-Age project. Despite its flaws, it’s enjoyable, and well worth a listen. Here’s hoping future releases will not be improvisations, though.
