The Eternal Returns – Century of False Dawn

The Eternal Returns has returned with another neoclassical, dark ambient album; this time with more experimentation and precision. Blending the realms of industrial, electronica and neoclassical, The Eternal Returns’ latest album is a masterful step in the right direction.

Firstly, the album’s production has noticeably improved. In my previous review of Autumn Introspection, I noted how lacking the mixing was; thankfully, it’s no longer a problem. Whether it’s the amicably balanced bells on No Light amidst the heavy soundscape, or light breakcore elements on In The Midst Of My Heart It Appeared As The Light Of A Spherical Sun; the mixing is consistently on point. As with previous Eternal Return entries, the composition department is admirable. The majority of songs flow with grace from start to finish, often taken an unexpected, yet fitting turn. The biggest standout is clearly Identities Become Outworn. The song blends punk and classical so seamlessly, it’d be difficult to label it with separate tags; it is to synth-rock what fourth world was to EDM.

It may be disappointingly short, but Century of False Dawn is exceptionally well crafted. Every moment is full of hidden surprises, every transition surprisingly delightful, and every section thoughtfully progressed. One can only hope The Enteral Returns next full-length LP is as consistent.
