Osker Wyld - II

II is a compilation of improvisations recorded between 2017 and 2021 by Osker Wyld. Released on February 2, 2022, the album was a short, yet thoroughly enjoyable classical album. The tracks are incredibly short yet fulfilling.

My favourite thing about II is its ambience. The piano is warm, delicate, and enshrined in a lively room. The only downside is the lack of a standout track or track longer than 2 minutes. The short suites work incredibly well, though the album is done before it has the chance to become truly absorbing. Thankfully, this method gives Osker Wyld plenty of tracks to demonstrate his range; there is a respectful amount of variation throughout. It flows from lively and jolly, to sombre and meditative, with ease. Lastly, unlike I by Wyld, the compositions are so precise they hardly feel like compositions at all.

The album doesn’t score high in innovation, though it soars in enjoyability. There is the question of whether Wyld could do more with these compositions; at one point he introduces rain and another time a reverse piano… should he do it more? Perhaps. Though at the end of the day II works so well because of its simplicity. It’s precise in its arrangements, yet it sounds lively and free.
There will always be a market for such lovely compositions.
