H O T E L H E A L T H - T R I L A K S A N A

H O T E L H E A L T H released the mixtape T R I L A K S A N A under Lawless Tranny on April 25, 2021. Mixing vapourwave, downtempo and plunderphonics, H O T E L H E A L T H doesn’t quite have a unique sound, but his arrangements are spectacular. Unfortunately, the album is devised of 33 tracks that are 33 seconds long, a stylistic choice that is both limiting and puzzling.

In its defence, the EP could be considered one piece, as it flows miraculously well. There’s purpose within the transitions on T R I L A K S A N A, and plenty of solid ideas. Furthermore, there’s many experimental moments that explore abrasive and trippy soundscapes profoundly. It’s a shame that none of the tracks are expanded upon, though, because as soon as one gets the groove, they are abandoned. For that reason alone, it’s not worth breaking down the tracks one by one, as they are too short to differentiate, though they are all equal in quality.

T R I L A K S A N A is an inconsistent, jarring experience, that could have been incredible had it not been undeveloped. I’m unsure of what statement H O T E L H E A L T H was trying to make limiting every song to 33 seconds, though it seems more likely that these are thirty-three abandoned ideas stitched together, rather than a masonic cult statement. Despite its flaws, its quite enjoyable; one could easily get many listens out of this mixtape and find something new each time – just a darn shame it isn’t longer.
