Digighouls – Angel

Despite apparently disbanding as a group, Digighouls released the mixtape Angel on April 16th, 2021. Focusing on the same blend of crushed-trap and trance that made Vampire Rave Party so terrible, Angel somehow improves upon Digighouls’ previous output, though it is marred by extensive production inconsistencies.

If it weren’t for the obnoxious vocals, Angel could have been Digighoul’s best work. While the simple pop compositions are still present, and the subject material shallow, the seamless flow throughout the album is undeniably charming. Songs like Go Away barely contain any music, though, and are instead held together by poor, muffled vocal melodies. Most tracks on Angel may have been good, had they not featured awful, over-compressed vocals; especially the title track.

The most disappointing aspect of Angel is how painfully average it is. There are some truly neat creative moments, such as the percussion during Pump Up The Jam and the surprisingly enjoyable samples on Lights, Camera, Action!, though it seems Digighouls are more concerned with pumping out numerous ideas than refining any of them. Furthermore, they are too concerned with a reigniting a dying genre (hyperpop). If they ever should return, they should work on their production in future.
