dnbNODE – The Edge EP

dnbNODE is an artist from Los Angeles, California. His works combine elements of DnB, Jazz, neurofunk and cyberpunk, elegantly devising a personality of his own. Whereas his Machine Learning EP relies heavily on DnB conventions, his latest EP The Edge EP does an admirable job at breaking the wheel.

The titled track, The Edge, is rather playful in its moments between the bars, though simultaneously feels restricted by the conventional placement of the beat. Thankfully, dnbNODE exceeds at progression, creatively making use of its impressive length. The Mirror showcases dnbNODE’s unconventional beats in a very digestible manner. The final two tracks are not as impressive; while Radiant spaces out to an admirable extent, it lacks innovation, and the closer Kinetics utilises dissonance in an interesting manner, though sounds lacking.

While the tracks themselves are remarkably refined, overall the EP doesn’t quite have the personality it needs to stand out, bar its magnificent aesthetic. Nevertheless, the experimentation is quite admirable, making each track delightful to listen to. Furthermore, the production here is gorgeous. It’s undeninable dnbNODE is perfectly capable of expanding upon his ideas; here’s hoping he can expand his EP/LP’s even further.
