dnbNODE – Machine Learning EP

dnbNODE is an artist from Los Angeles, California. His works combine elements of DnB, Jazz, neurofunk and cyberpunk, elegantly devising a personality of his own. While it does have moments of genius, Machine Learning EP is a mixed bag.

Bumba Rat opens the album with grace and style, though is rather conventional. Much could be same about the title track, Machine Learning, which is playfulm but sticks far too heavily to DnB conventions. Beatdown is the clear standout here; an exception to the album’s formulaic framework. Each beat is marvellously arranged, as is the thematic neurotic psychosis prevalent through the track. The demented intervals that tie the section together rivet with enthusiasm and character. Had the rest of the album followed suit, it would be incredibly easy to recommend. Unfortunately, the album returns to a standard formula for Sudden Stop.

When dnbNODE strays away from the conventions of DnB, he truly exceeds. Aside from conventional song writing, much of Machine Learning EP is also missing personality; there’s very little to differentiate from the canon of techno. Here’s hoping dnbNODE is able to cultivate his own sound moving forward, as his dynamic progressions and production skills are marvellous.
