Asserter – Last Words of a Parasitic Flower

Asserter is a fourth world producer from Louisville, Kentucky. His works blur the lines between ambient, noise, drone and metaphysical explorations, while his cheeky personality oozes from the seams. An expertise in sound designing and mixing, Float Primes is a masterclass in nonsensical suites.

While the tracks are masterfully produced and exceptionally well-spaced, Last Words of a Parasitic Flower often sounds too much like a Float Primes B-side compilation. Ode to Mitchell may be the exception; a gorgeous serenade with omnipresent intricacies. Many of its synths build upon one another with exuberance, upsetting the organic relationship that binds electronic manipulation to ambience; sadly, the track has little idea how to end itself. Summer In My Veins fails to utilise its vocal manipulation to any artistic merit, and Untitled barely justifies its spot on the track listing. Fortunately, Asserter reminds us of his production value during the closer, Sinking Refuge / Four in a Cage, though it sounds directionless and underdeveloped compared to Asserter’s greater works.

Despite the ambience being on point, Last Words of a Parasitic Flower somehow doesn’t feel as creative or spectacular as its counterpart. Thankfully, Asserter’s soundscapes are still captivating and invigorating throughout; his lesser works are still interesting to listen to. One can only hope his next release has a more distinct vision.
