De Blimp – Pink Goym

De Blimp are a band from Ontario, Canada. Their songs borrow heavily from psychedelic rock and blues, while also incorporating a wide range of styles from avant-garde, experimental rock, alternative and new-wave. Pink Goym was essentially a solo album by one half of the band, it was co-released with the equally stunning Rhino Giraffe Man as a package. While not as consistent as its partner in crime, Pink Goym contains the most striking and noteworthy peaks of De Blimp’s discography.

Some of the best songs are the shortest, and work at their length. Trying to Sleep fizzles out before it really begins but is a superb introduction to the album. Space Herb sounds gorgeous and doesn’t waste a single bar. Both Chlorine Brain and Time Distortion share the most memorable riffs of the album. Yet, De Blimp’s instrumentation on Pink Goym is clearly favourite towards the longer song structures, such as during the impeccable Ice Man and magnificent closer, Icicle. Moreover, the first half of the album is quite uneven; this is the opposite of a front-loaded album. Accuser lacks the percussive refinement it deserves to hit hard, Chlorine Brain is rather basic (Time Distortion is more impressively developed), and Tote Männer is one of the most unmemorable instrumentals De Blimp have featured on their albums. Thankfully songs such as Deep Dive and Space Herb make the first half much more bearable; particularly the former with its creative dynamic vox colourful, delirious soundscape.

There’s certainly an admirable quality to Pink Goym’s progression; the ongoing degradation of structure is a pleasure to witness, as the album begins increasingly disorientating and gradually more absorbing. The moments that click are a godsend; partly due to De Blimps masterful blend of post-rock, stoner-sludge and microtonal plucking. One can hope elements of Pink Goym are returned to in future, since the overall sound is unbelievably memorable. Despite its inconsistencies, the record is rather remarkable.
