DapMasterNasty – Shill

I had no idea what to expect going into DapMasterNasty’s Shill. The album cover was obnoxious, and the production was abysmal, but the compositions were a constant surprise. Released on December 15th, 2021, the album was an enjoyable amalgamation of experimental punk, electronic-sludge, and noise rock.

The album’s not worth breaking down track by track, though there is an admirable amount of variety in textures throughout the track-listing. What’s more impressive is the consistent energy DapMasterNasty keeps throughout Shill; it never skips a beat. The attention to detail is admirable, as is the overall songwriting. The sound design is not entirely unique, though the performance makes up for it; most of the tracks here have as much passion as a good Death Grips record. While the album sits at a mere 20-minutes length, it’s easily digestible and solid on repeated listens.

I’m still unsure whether or not DapMasterNasty is taking his artist profile seriously. There’s no artist bio, no proper art photo, and absolutely zero links. In whole honesty, I chose the album for review because the album art eluded me to a poor album (need some poor album reviews to balance out the good ones). Colour me shocked when it wasn’t. With a little more experimentation, a little more tweaking, and perhaps a little more care, DapMasterNasty could make a standout record in the underground scene.
