Weatherday - Come In

Come In, released by Weatherday on April 29th, 2019, is another sloppy-indie rock album that gets away with its incoherence via the genre tag “emo.” The emotion is genuine, but it can’t flourish in an overall album that is overall tacky, shallow, and completely rips Car Seat Headrest. Somehow it works, mostly thanks to its overall spirit, though not as well as other similar Emo acts.

The noise is the only saving grace, and it’s darn impressive. Older than before (Oswald made no way for himself)’s fuzzy soundscape is warm and inviting, heightened by a lovely, jovial melody. My Sputnik Sweetheart is both the longest and most impressive track on the album; a piece which almost marks a solid turning point for the songwriting. A brilliant track that carries the album. The following songs are suddenly more expansive, and free in nature. Songs with female vocals are the best, such as the subdue moments during Water dreamer the same and Агaтка (Agatha! You're being melodramatic). On the flip side, the male vocals are underwhelming. Typical of emo, it constantly clashes with the mix and often come across as a single-take. One could only dream of how Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes would have greatly improved songs such as Mio, min Mio with his more-impressive vocal performance and similar framework.

Regardless, the range on Come In is exquisite. Despite it being borderline poor at times, the compositions are varied and flow well. It’s no wonder how certain indie rock albums such as these garner such a large following, despite the songwriting and performances being so bland. They’re genuine, and quite enjoyable. Sadly, they’re unrefined, and quite sloppy.
