Droopies - Responsible People

Responsible People, released November 18, 2017, is an uneven mix of delightful surprises and mediocre indie-pop/rock rehashes.

The tracks on Responsible People are typical of what’d you find in your local bar; there’s nothing to differentiate the band from the canon of rock music. The funk elements, such as on the opener, are awesome. The dry indie-rock elements are far less captivating, though, and sadly comprise most of the album. The songs are difficult to distinguish; this is partly due to the abhorrent mixing, though mostly due to the benign songwriting. It’s a waste of time breaking them down as the overwhelming majority of them are filler.

There are some good qualities. The slower, subdue tracks, such as Pulse and What Continues are quite enjoyable. When surf-psych is incorporated, it’s pretty engaging, such as during Apart and the solid closer. The drumming is also a highlight; whether it’s transitioning segments on the sublime What Continues, maintainin the drive on Fibre or pounding furiously on I’m Amazed; they’re very consistent. Sadly, these are the only three good qualities I could think of for the purposes of this review.

Responsible People will undoubtfully have its audience, though I doubt they’ll be anywhere but locally. It gives me no pleasure to review an album so harshly, but the album was a chore to get through. After half way, I couldn’t wait for it to be over. There are better indie-rock suites to waste your time with.
