zigmund void - zametka

Zigmund void, also known under the alias смерть, is an incredibly unique electronic krautrock artist from god-knows where. His latest album, zametka, released February 2nd, 2022, had a major flaw dragging the otherwise impressive experience down.

Being cool has never felt weirder than on zpomni; a smooth jazz track infused with noise. Its haunting outro is thoroughly enjoyable. The second track, Doma, on the other hand, is a mess. Dissonance is key to enjoying Zigmund Void’s music, though here it seems unintentional and sloppy. Od blends krautrock with shoegaze in an unoriginal, yet enjoyable manner, as does the impressive megalith chornaya mari. Lastly, the finale kiev is a spectacle, and ranks among the artist’s best. This is mostly because it’s an instrumental track.

Whereas Atomic Café soared due to its ingenious sound design, Zametka is limited purely by the vocals. Not only are they consistently off key, but somehow the low-fi recordings do not fit their nature at all. Not all tracks are marred by the vocals, such as the maniacal chort, reklema and the funky oi. All these tracks only feature small bursts of lyrics, though. The more they incessantly appear, the lesser the quality of the track. The worst offender is easily ot teba; a trepid, sentimental track that’s mildy amusing for the instrumental bridge halfway through the song, though the artist cannot help get in his own way throughout the remainder.

There’s no way to summarise the experience overall without repeating what has already been said. The tape fits into a category of “so bad it’s amusing.” Honestly, if it weren’t for some of the awesome tracks right at the end, this project would have scored below average. If you’re a fan of the artist, make sure you check em out. Otherwise, pray he either learns how to sing or not sing at all on future projects.
