Arvid – Pyreburning

Arvid is a solo bedroom producer/composer from Rochester, New York. Released on February 25th, 2022, the album was a pleasant surprised that got better as it the track listing progressed.

Headlights introduces the listener to the timid singer, though the vocals work surprisingly well amid the fuzzy, vivacious soundscape. The vocals throughout the remaining album are less than spectacular, especially during dull indie-pop ballads such as Garden’s Gone, though thankfully they are far in between. Surprisingly, most songs on the album follow the same suite; they start as simple pop/rock ballads and evolve into remarkable, instrumental outros. Songs such as Headlights, Windows, Ghostly and the previously mentioned Garden’s Gone all display wonderful, harmonious walls of sound. Undeniably, they make up for the poor vocals and lack of new ideas.

The album smartly choses to home in on its strengths during The Pyre, Pt. 1, 2 & 3. There are intermittent vocals, though pleasantly weaved in. The lengthy songs are fully developed, instrumentally diverse, and astonishingly engaging. Had the album followed the same formula in the first half, it would have been more noteworthy. Suffice to say, Arvid’s speciality of letting the instrumentals roam is wonderful. Sadly, it just ends at the height of its crescendo; I seriously thought my headphones had died on me.

Pyreburning is a very good album with a few shortcomings that drag it down. The artist truly ought to develop his vocals in the meantime, as well as expand upon his compositions further. Nonetheless, there’s a unique sound in the mix, and a stunning personality at bay. I’m excited to see what’s next for the bedroom producer, as well as what’s in his past.
