Sweetrocket - John Lennon Rolling In His Fucking Grave

The horrendous cover of John Lennon Rolling In His Fucking Grave shouldn’t steer you away; sweetrocket’s latest LP is a delightful surprise. The band exceeds at simple, yet memorable soundscapes within their otherwise straightforward suites.

The instrumentation throughout is creatively diverse. Little hazy’s sweet guitar feedback toward the end is the highlight of a sweet, harmonious opener. Like many songs, it features an excellent expansion of instrumentation. Camels could almost be considered influenced by Eastern influences; its pert instrumentation is quirky and sincere, bolstered by a fitting television sample. On Gold, the wammy guitars beautifully encapsulate the singer, as do the reverbed guitars on Tales from Tennessee.

Sadly, the longest song on the album and the mid point, zyouth, almost kills the flow. The stoner vibe and slack delivery result in an overlong and lacklustre experience. It almost sounds like the Truckers Atlas (Modest Mouse) of smoking pot. The song at least demonstrates they are capable of keeping a jam going for an extended period of time; it just would have be better live. Bucket of water sadly continues the trend. By Eskimo huskies the album had simply run out of ideas. The sample use was very dull. Tugboat is a nice surprise, though.

John Lennon Rolling In His Fucking Grave is a mixed bag, but when it’s good, it’s really good. Sadly, its lows are low. Evident by the shitposting-esque cover, the band ought to take it more seriously on the next output. They need not succumb to stoner parables and edgy suites; the band is talented, and capable of so much more. Here’s hoping their next tracklist is tighter.
