Fax Gang - FxG3000

After reviewing countless Digighouls’ albums, I had very little hope for the bitcrushed genre. FxG3000, by Fax Gang, relinquished that fear. Released on March 19th, 2020; the EP was 18 minutes of non-stop bit-crushed trap.

Fax Gang is not faxing around with the headbanging opener Breath2 (In/Out). It sets the BPM high for the remaining album. Jailbroken mostly stands out due to its vibrant and detailed instrumentals; the fuzz only adds to the genuinely absorbing atmosphere. Soaked is a filler experiment halfway through the album, though it picks right back up with Centrifuge. The highlight, Jeopardy, is left till last. Its soundscape is bliss; especially the reversed sampled outro.

FxG3000 is the natural progression of Drain Gang’s signature sound. Thankfully, the vocals are even better, as are the plunderphonics. Each track is rich, vibrant, and doesn’t sound unnecessarily bit crushed to death. There’s thought put into each soundscape, and each soundscape is memorable. The album will appeal to fans of hyper pop, but to a fresh ear, it’s an overly distorted mess. Stick with it, though, as its sound design is wholly absorbing. Both jarring and iridescent at the same time, FxG3000 is a triumph in crushed sound design.
