Wagon Lord - Loading Please Wait for this Webpage to Load

Wagon Lord, known mostly for his poor production, impeccable songwriting and zany antrics, managed to push his own boundaries on Loading Please Wait for this Webpage to Load. For an artist that despises TMR, he benefits greatly from its nonsensical format. Mixing harsh noise, progressive and classical rock; the result sounds unlike anything else in Lord’s catalogue.

While Wagon Lord’s poor production tends to impede his compositions, on Loading Please Wait for this Webpage to Load they are the focal point. Each section is enriched by a cathartic, borderline schizophrenic coat of fuzz. Cacophonies are utilized to maximal effect, albeit sparingly, such as rampantly throughout the mid-section of IDIOT. Lord’s classical-based compositions are still the glue that tie each section marvelously together. What’s most surprising is its enthusiasm. While the production may deceive one into believing it was made in an afternoon, the compositions themselves boast incredible articulation and admirable progression, and sound as if they were worked on for eons. STUPID, while not as strong as its counterparts, is thoroughly enjoyable. The first half incorporates vocal dissonance to a pleasurable effect, while the remaining track waffles into a jovial decay.

The album’s main fault lies in its lack of textural range. While there are plenty of jaunt instrumentals, there is no attention to detail in differentiating them. Suffice to say, had Lord spent the time and effort refining them in the mixing department, they could have had a larger impact. For instance, the bells in DUMB, for instance, would have been a magnificent relief to the overburdening harsh frequencies, had they not been distorted to the same effect.

Unfortunately, the Lord seems more concerned with trolling his fanbase, rather than appealing to them. Suffice to say, Wagon Lord may actually be known more over time for his trolling antics, rather than his music. It’s a shame, because he’s an excellent composer. If only Lord had recorded these pieces with some acoustics.
