Sunset Club – “Homework”

Sunset Club is a French-house disco producer from Iowa City, Iowa. It may do little stylistically to differentiate itself from other house projects on the scene, but his latest EP “Homework” is undeniably jammy.

On the positive side of things, aesthetically, the tracks are gorgeous. Skyline R34 rocks a consistent summer vibe and features a magnificent, roaring electronic guitar solo. Yoitega changes its tempo and dynamics halfway through in an interesting and varied process. The artist should certainly consider progressing all future tracks in the same manner. Lastly, while the composition is quite flat and boring, Snow Storm’s sound design is beautiful, thanks to its respectful use of space.

The best moments are clearly those which introduce an element of progression, or a unique identifiable instrument, such as the guitar on the opener mentioned previously. Where Sunset Club truly faulters is within the repetition. While it may seem to be deliberate, on repeated listens it can become exhausting. Despite a sensational, delirious soundscape, (Don't) Call On Me is plagued by this phenomena. The song features gorgeous textural work throughout, which consistently sounds dynamic and lively, but the obnoxious “for the money” sample kills the beautiful, underlying mood. While it would work in a live set, it sounds painfully boring on record.

Despite its lack of innovation, “Homework” is quite a commendable effort. This is mostly due to the beautiful underlaying synth work, which sounds consistently upbeat and miraculously on point. Furthermore, the production is a step above most amateur producers. A longer album as consistent in quality would be easy to recommend. Suffice to say, it’s worth keeping an ear out for Sunset Club. Here’s hoping the artist can focus on his stronger aspects in future releases and do away with the repetition. Here’s
