Bidocea - Xenon Dreams

Bidocea is an avant-garde experimental electronic producer from Romania. His music dabbles in hip-hop, industrial electronica and cubistic deconstructionism. As an upcoming producer on the scene, his music is incredibly unique and impossible to ignore.

Throughout Xenon Dreams, Bidocea throws a bunch of shit at the wall, but not all of it sticks. The tracks that stick out do so for good reason. 🄷🄰🅃🄿 ft. 🏴‍☠️𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸☂️ is among them. It’s weird, but vibrant and hypnotic. It eventually devolves into a dissonant, spectacular mess. 𝓓𝓸𝔀𝓷 ft. sleepy randy is both crass, humorous an absorbing. Various samples twirl in and out among the immaculate, subtle classical and hip-hop progression. P⃣ E⃣ A⃣ K⃣ ft. Gregor McMurray is one of Bidocea’s finest; the song never stands still, frequently distracting from its main melody to explore frivolous frequencies. The flow is genuinely beautiful.

The album’s greatest flaw is it takes a while before it shows its potential. The first few tracks are rough, and flow awkwardly. g̷l̶i̶t̶c̵h̸h̷h̷  is intriguing, comical way to open the album, but its underveloped. The same could be said for 𝓅𝑜𝓂𝑒𝑔𝓇𝒶𝓃𝒶𝓉𝑒𝓈.  ᄅdₐy – seems more of a joke than anything but has some cool effects. DPH W≋A≋V≋E≋ could have been awesome, had it not suddenly ended just as it was ramping up. The progression on the grand scale is super good, but most segments involve a repeated beat, which are often monotonous and lack progression.

On the contrary, there is a beautiful streak in the second half of the album from ᕲ༙྇ᘿ༙྇ᐺ༙྇ᓰ༙྇ᒪ༙྇ till close to the end. The first track in this streak boasts a rich, colourful stream of noise. 𝕸𝖚̹𝖘͔̫̯̠͙𝖆̩͉𝖋̬̩͎̙̮𝖎̺̙̗͔̦̯𝖗̗̭̗͔̖ ft. boon has an excellent progression. ᔕᗩᑕᖇ♗ᖴ♗ᑕE is trippy, weird and hypnotic. M♾NEY has a beautiful, majestic stop-start effect that contiuously reels one in, spins them round and tosses them out, only to repeat the process again. Completely_lost incorporates Eastern influences in a strange, yet absorbing manner. 🅆̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄰̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄻̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄻̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🅂̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞_̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄾̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄵̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞_̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄱̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄻̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄾̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄾̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞🄳̳̳̼̟̮ͨ́ͫ͜͠͠͞͞  harkens back to Bidocea’s earlier works. The sample use is well distributed among the fragmented beats and slick vocals. My only complaint would be it fluffs about aimlessly during its mid-section. Combined, these songs could have devised a fulfilling EP. Unfortunately, the remaining album is overflowing with filler.

Overall, Xenon Dreams is a solid album. Despite its commendable length, the album may have worked better had it been shorter. Flaws aside, Xenon Dreams does succeed at one major accomplishment; it has a distinguishable sound. It’s for this reason alone, I’m very excited to see what Bidocea has brewing next.
