Cyrus Wirth – Ivy EP

It takes an extraordinary amount of confidence to put yourself forward as an artist, yet alone place your face on the cover of your work. While the music on Ivy EP may not be as bold and striking as the artist on the cover, it’s certainly well-polished and admiringly brave. Unfortunately, the album is mostly inspired by recent musical trends and playlist-appealing aesthetics.

There’s very little to distinguish Ivy EP from its influences. Blending James Blake’s cold instrumental synths and vocals, along with Lil Peep’s emo cloud-rap aesthetic, Cyrus Wirth offers very little to the cannon of music. What to Do teases glitch electronica and Ivy incorporates psychedelic rock, but the execution is so basic, and the compositions are as innovative as food companies that only change the colouring of their food.

Cyrus Wirth was smart to place his face on the cover, as it’s the only distinguishing feature of his debut EP. Production and execution are both admirable, yet the polish is wasted due to the shallow material. One can hope in future the producer expands his catalogue of influences and creates something a little less accessible and a little more expressive.
