Fine I Guess – Gormley

Sometimes an album can be so short, so insignificant and so blatantly unoriginal, but still sound wholesome and undeniably appealing. Gormley, by Fine I Guess, achieves such feats due to its raw, unapologetic instrumentation and charismatic vocals.

One could say Gormley’s major flaw is its short length – it barely gets its feet off the ground before it calls it for the night. Despite being a Neutral Milk Hotel rip-off (without the lo-fi aesthetics), it nails the authentic Ontario aesthetic perfectly encapsulated on its cover. Canadian Sky demands to be longer, Nostradamus is marvellously enduring, and Circus perfectly emotionally rounds the album off well. If only there were more songs.

It’s a shame the album is so short; a full lp of similar quality would rank much higher. Wherever the underground artist is, one can hope he’s warm and working on a his next venture.
