Vegas – I Thought You Wanted to Change

Bad

Vegas is an experimental ambient electronic artist from Wales, UK. His album, I Thought You Wanted to Change, barely offers anything substantial to the cannon of rock music; though it does showcase a rather unrefined, yet passionate artist.

I Thought You Wanted to Change is composed of three songs. The opener, despite being titled the Vilest Song Ever, it’s quite tame. Where it lacks in substance, it makes up for in technical marvel. The eerie use of space is used quite effectively, yet the track fails to build up any energy as it poorly over-relies on samples and lazily layers its synthetics. What 'av ya had for your tea? is an unenthusiastic detour that barely serves any purpose aside from being a bridge between the first and last track. The  album ends with a rather inconsistent track, I Did So Much Good In This World/Why Can't I Be Like Everyone Else. Much like the opener, there’s very little to differentiate itself from other electronic pieces. Worst of all it wastes an unwarranted amount of time for silence in the centre. The album had very limit impact till this moment, and resultingly it loses any momentum it had. Fortunately, its second half is very pleasant to listen to, yet it can’t redeem what preceded it.

I Thought You Wanted to Change is a great step in the right direction, yet it sadly only feels like a step. Given the time and effort, Vegas could truly blossom into a substantial producer; his mixes of electronic ambience and post rock are quite pleasant in essence – it just needs a lot more work put into it.
