Eoin lyness – Automata

Eoin Lyness is an ambient producer from Banbridge, North Ireland. According to Eoin, Automata is an abstract expressionist sound installation, simultaneously everywhere and nowhere, that seeks to challenge this perception of music as commodity over fine art. While it may have its appealing moments, the album rarely challenges the conventions of ambience music.

In The Light I Am Darkness’s calm drones are a delightful touch, exceptionally intertwined throughout an array of field recordings. Ambience is equally frightening and comforting within Ocean of Noise and I Am Become Death; songs that offer little to the genre yet exceed in their execution. Unfortunately, the title track Automata is a wasted opportunity; it’s high pitched drone sounds alluring amidst its shifting soundscape, though it’s already an overly explored territory. Considering the length of the track, it sadly drags the album down. Fortunately, Mutilation of Art is substantially more engaging, with its charming drones and alluring ambience. The closer, In the Darkness I am Light, is genuinely gorgeous, albeit plainly unadventurous.

What Automata is mostly missing is a personality of its own. Much of the best noise is front loaded in the album, yet the second half tends to focus too much on conventional ambience tropes and overused pads. Nonetheless. when Eoin Lyness embraces harrowing noise, he exceeds. One can only hope he continues to explore the unsettling domain of ambience further.
