Vaxio - Life is Beautiful, Ugly And Limited
Vaxio is an excellent up and coming band from Austria. Their first album, “Life is Beautiful, Ugly and Limited,” is an inconsistent yet positive predicament of what’s to come.
Cursed Soul opens the album in a predictable, yet genuinely divine manner. The drumming is on point throughout the entire song and the drones perfectly induce hypnotism. The contrast between the shifting, harrowing synths/drones and the trepidatious guitars work well. Beeline from start to finish are intricate, spacious alternating rhythms which resolutely atremble. Despite the oversaturated genre, these magical additions embellish soul and personality. The Man Who Will Know the Lie is a silly, yet stylish interlude. The atmosphere is strangely mellifluous, though the production often feels cheap. Shitcom cordially borrows elements from Death Grips while evolving into its abstruse convivial. The rhythm and progression are great fun. Lunatic Diary is an inconsistent venture into grindcore/noise. Sadly, despite the delightful sundry of frequencies, the song evolves in a predictable and frivolous manner. The progression is admirable, though many of the riffs have been done before. Brainwash Club continues the trend of Shitcom with its own charming personality – particularly the second half. The amiable bowled-over rhythms of Paralyzed exasperate great energy, though at this point in the album Vaxio starts to sound too much like Death Grips. The clamour tends to overstay its welcome as it drowns out the raucous production. Medicine Makes Me Mindless is mirthful, yet circumspect. He Knows returns to the heights of the opening, though is missing the elegance and distinctive electronics that made the first track stand out from the competition.
The album boasts an extremely strong start, though loses steam as it progresses. Furthermore, the album often feels like it’s borrowing from so many genres without developing its own, distinct personality. Moreover, some songs tend to overstay their welcome; sometimes less is more. If one decides to skip this album, I strongly recommend he/she checks out Vaxio’s latest stuff. Many complaints have been addressed in their latest efforts and their next album is perhaps my most anticipated release of the year.
