Alex Auld – Iteration

Bad

I’m unsure of where Alex Auld is from, though he’s a regular poster on /mu/. I admire the lad’s consistent shilling and suspect he may produce above-average work in future.

Superior is a cliché, yet enjoyable start to the album. The flow is solid, and there are some great experimental moments. Failure’s Not an Option is a solid contrast to the previous song. Piano keys shine throughout Good Graces, which complement Alex Auld’s flow quite well. Let The Blessings In is a fantastic song; the reverse-engineered sounds are genuinely divine amidst the subtle, yet fervent percussion. Phantom (feat. Evo) features a tame sonic soundscape, and the feature does not add anything to the track. LFTD cordially boasts lovely female vocals and shifting soundscapes; it’s production is noteworthy. Flatline is an abstruse, yet short detour. Burn, in comparison, is sombre and expressive. Auld has run out of many ideas by God Send, a formulaic piece that should have been cut. Much could be said about Intuition. The last two songs are much better, however; Visions’ production is accosted and lush, while Horizon attempts to experimentally round off the album. These songs are extremely basic and have been done much too often, yet Auld injects much needed charm.

Auld’s songs are tight, yet tend to prattle. Moreover, the production is extremely conventional and much too safe. Many of these songs are one-trick ponies, providing very little progression. That’s not to say Iteration is a bad album; Alex Auld boasts an impressive personality and solid flow. Furthermore, Alex Auld’s distinct voice is certainly expressive and enjoyable. It’s apparent Auld has the passion, he is just completely unaware of any genre outside the one he produces. I suggest he spend a year or two trying to broaden his tastes.
