Darkmatternebula – Waste

Darkmatternebula is a German artist who, in his own words, makes omniscient and omniviolent industrial sludge. His work is among the best on 4chan, and any regular will already be familiar with his work.

Waste, the opener, is a fascinating blend of Andy Stott and Amon Tobin. The cathartic vocal harmony is balanced by a grotesque, industrial sludge. The dynamic swapping between noise, drum & bass and sampling is rather charming. Furthermore, the track has a marvellous flow into Waster; a track with a weak introduction, but an incredible lush progression. The beats are chaotic and impeccably dispersed; the pads are tastefully implemented, and the eerie atmosphere is on point. Every section on the next track, Wasted, is distinct and has a solid transition; the murky pulsating synths are thick and delightful. Wastend is a brief, disappointing finale.

While it may be too short and have a weak ending, Waste is overall a solid EP. It has just enough interesting ideas in its 10 minutes to be worthy of anyone’s Bandcamp collection. Moreover, it signifies the start of Darkmatternebula’s solid output of material; one I insist he keep building upon.
