Lazy Eyelids - Glacier Bay
Lazy Eyelids is a solo artist from Seattle, Washington, who specialises in a mix of indie rock, post hardcore and math rock. Moreover, his music sounds like a mix of Xiu Xiu, Carissa’s Weird, June of 44 and Sparklehorse. His debut album, Glacier Eyelids, is an unapologetically raw stream of consciousness from a tormented soul; the result is equally stunning and heart wrenching.
The standouts of Glacier Eyelids are clear as daylight. Impeccable keys are buried deep within an impressive math rock suite on Even the Ghosts Left. Sail Away has a standard opening, but an incredibly expressive and gorgeous progression. Little Strings is phenomenal; the vocals are impressively expressive, while the austere instrumentals perfectly encapsulate the melancholy. Snow Cannibal is peak emo rock; Eyelids’ vocal output is phenomenal, as are the immaculate keys.
Sometimes the vocals are not so strong, though; at times they sound amateurish in lieu of being expressive. Similarly, some songs have incredibly lush instrumentals, such as Inside and Fuck Me Up, though suffer from an overly standard composition. Moreover, while the last three songs of the album boast an impressive atmosphere and fantastic drumming throughout (and my goodness, the drums are impeccable throughout the entire album), the tracks become much too self-indulgent. In contrast to the first two thirds of the album, they sound tiresome.
Much like the remarkable Fragments of Encoded Memories by Lion Trail, Glacier Bay is an incredible record that suffers partly due to its inconsistency. Fortunately, its highs are extremely high, and its lows are above average. It’s tempting when creating an emotionally raw and honest album to include all the details – though some may have been better suited to a B-side collection. Nonetheless, Glacier Bay contains some of the best underground emo rock and deserves to be in everyone’s collection.
