Quiet Commotion - Hallå, Kära Flod!

Hallå, Kära Flod! was an album released on June 18th, 2021, by Quiet Commotion. What was most impressive about the album was the fact it was created by a young teenager.

The album is admirably emotional throughout, and often quite a lull. This often works wonders, such as during the sweet lullaby Potholes Mark the Pavement and A Rushing River Speaks, where the piano arrangements are well thought out and catch the wondering ear. Most of the songs follow the same formula; thankfully, the album is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s free flowing, dreamy and expressive. Additions of gentle synthetics go a long way, as does the sparse use of drums. Most importantly, while the vocals are akin to Elliot Smith, the soundscapes are unique and distinguishable from the late great poet’s ballads.

There’s one factor holding Hallå, Kära Flod! Back from receiving a higher recommendation; it’s lack of variety. While the consistent atmosphere is thoroughly enjoyable, it’s lacking distinguishable tracks, with the exception of the Beatles-esque Missing Cat Posters. Sweet moments like these break up the monotony, though they’re far in between. The album still comes with a solid recommendation, though; it’s sweet, wistful and very impressive for a fourteen-year-old.
