THISPLANETISNOTHING -#THISPLANETISNOTHING

THISPLANETNEEDSMOREDRUGS is a fucking sick band. Sure, they rock the same sound many artists have done before them, though with a unique technical proficiency in the composition department. They are essentially a modern Phish with their hard emphasis on guitar solos, prog-rock tempo shifts, lengthy instrumental improvisations, and a tongue-in-cheek approach to songwriting. Their debut is not the strongest entry point, though contains some excellent ideas. Too bad they’re far in between.

  1. Intro/Jeffrey - Fine intro, could really do without that autotune, though. If you disliked the autotune in Chods, you’re gonna hate it here.

  2. F F F D (feat. Himalayapinksalt) – Absolutely shreds in the noise department, though its main melody is rather stagnate until its god-tier funky detour. It’s almost like getting pissed on, but then some of it gets into your mouth and you realise the deliverer drinks a lot of pineapple juice and it’s not bad.

  3. Lance Wyoming – Undeniable proof the artist started ripping off System of a Down before they started experimenting with drugs and actively trying to destroy their vocal chords and amps at the same time. Good shit.

  4. Island (feat. Himalayapinksalt) – Simultaneously tropical, lush and bursting with flavour. The vocal delivery here does a great job emulating islander aesthetics, as does the neat drum fills. The track doesn’t rely on these aesthetics, either, as it progresses into a more standard, yet fitting finale. Easily the best song on #THISPLANETNEEDSLESSWOMEN.

  5. Gurl (feat. Upset Stomach) – The most disappointing song on the tracklist, purely due to the group vocal harmonies. What was the artist thinking? Thankfully, it’s only two minutes long, though like a fly in your soup, it kind of ruins the whole experience.

  6. Psych Song (feat. Eddie Everbright) – Experiments a lot in the composition department, and quite brilliantly so. Its sound design is lacking, though; it’s clear the artist was still experimenting on their debut.

  7. Collapse of Complex Systems – Far greater in scope and more metal than the preceding tracks. Despite its grand length, impressive vocals and hearty improvisational instrumental detours, it can’t help sounding boring. The first two minutes steal from other metal artists, the mid-section noodles without purpose, and the second-last section sounds anticlimactic. Despite the harrowing walls of sounds and gliding auto-tuned vocals, it sounds layered without purpose. Only the final two minutes is salvageable.

  8. Visionary Leadership – Opens up exceptionally, though like the previous track, tends to waffle.

Edited down to a tight EP, #THISPLANETISMETROSEXUAL could have made a phenomenal debut. It’s overloaded with fluff, though. If you’re a huge, gigantic faggot (or worse, a weeb), and like your ramen with plenty of noodles and a mere slice of processed meat, you make like this album. I’m a fucking man, though, and I like my albums how I like my pasta; filled with meat and without a strand of spaghetti in sight. #THISPLANETISCAN’TSTOPTRUMPIN2024 is worth listening to once if you’re a fan, though you’re better of listening their sophomore effort.
