Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack – Glow City

Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack, led by Tim de Reuse, is an incredibly refreshing solo act from Montreal, Québec. Following the impeccable I Don't Know What You're Worried About, Reuse followed up with the equally as impressive Glow City, an album less reliant on IDM structures and more on rock elements. His latest work focuses less on krautrock, and instead opts for a more streamlined blend of IDM and post-punk. The result is magnificent.

Earth Sun Idol is a powerful opener with an excellent use of reverb and cloudy synthetic space. San Angelo is more straightforward, but admirable jammy. Many moments of brilliance are scattered throughout. The song blends seamlessly into the magnificent, and disappointingly short Wednesday is the Cruelest Month. The One for Cyrus & Jeff is unbelievably impressive – the twisted saxophones add excellent flair to the cryptic soundscape, and the groove is consistently rockin’. Stasis Year [v2015] is one of Reuse’s best songs among his entire catalogue. The tremendous blend of post-punk and electronica is as seamless as it is expressive. The song is beautiful, emotional, and impactful. Not enough words can do it justice. Glow City, or, A Disease in Your Clique, or... magnificently alternates between frenzied environments and smooth, breezy segments. The Ascetic, Parts I - III (North TX Story - "What Would Happen Then?" - The New Mundanity) slowly builds into an iridescent, frantic textural boogy. Even the more straight-forward tracks, such as The Great Modifier, Full of Water and Secondary are consistently smooth and enjoyable, but they are not as consistent as the first half of the album. The album ends with the brilliant Stasis II: Stasis Forever, a beautiful overture building upon the first Stasis.

Glow City improves upon the greatest weakness of I Don't Know What You're Worried About; the repetition. Unlike Worried, however, the album tends to waffle toward the ends. Yet by honing more in towards post-punk, Reuse has found the sweet spot on Glow City. Very few albums in the underground scene are this energetic, original and incredibly well produced. Water Gun Water Gun Sky Attack’s catalogue comes with an enormous recommendation, and Glow City stands as his best output. Check him out already.
