BrainΦΠΦTemple - Kristallgeist

Kristallgeist is a Berlin-school bred electronica album, mainly derived from keyboards. Its sound design is akin to 70’s kosmische musik, especially regarding its lengthy composition. Released by BrainΦΠΦTemple on August 19th, 2021, the album was an enjoyable, yet uninventive suite.

Klaus Schulze is clearly the biggest influence on Kristallgeist. Dada II sounds right out of Timewind (1975). The krautrock elements are gorgeous (especially the shifting synths around the 7-minute mark), though the composition leaves something to be desired, especially in the second half. O.G.R’s progression into its iridescent second half is formulaic, yet alluring. The closing title-track is easily the most admirable, however, with its gradual descent into dark, unnerving soundscapes. It’s the only track that seems to cultivate its own identity among the canon of electronic music, notably around the mid-section.

Kristallgeist is undeniably enjoyable. This is due to the crisp, rich walls of keys present throughout the album. What’s most impressive is the length; each suite is captivating and long. The album’s main problem is it sounds exactly like the era that inspired it. An infusion of another genre would go a long way. Despite its flaws, it’s surprisingly enjoyable. If BrainΦΠΦTemple can take her skills and develop something more unique, it’s bound to stand out.
