BLACK CRAYON - WEEKEND AT MATT'S

Despite a crass cover, WEEKEND AT MATT’S was a short, enjoyable punk-rock record released on October 6th, 2021. The tracks were consistent and dutifully funky.

The album doesn’t hold back with its high intensity opener, Ridoy Forgot To Turn The Mic On. Despite being extremely short, it has a lot of personality via its distinct vocals and brief instances of a harmonica. The song flows incredible well into NO POINT!, a fun jam. There are some filler tracks throughout the remaining album, such as All Of My Ladies Are Historically Short and Bar Chords, but surprisingly the majority of the songs are distinct and memorable. Even during its sloppier moments, it’s extremely enjoyable, as a good punk album should be.

The vocals are easily the best aspect of this album. Not only are they chaotic and energetic, they’re also comical and thoroughly enjoyable throughout. The adlibs are respectable; BLACK CRAYON should include even more in future. My only complaint is in respect to the production; not so much the recording equipment, but the lack of proper mixing/mastering. Moreover, some of the recordings are a little too close to the mic. Regardless, WEEKEND AT MATT’S is full of character and is a delightful surprise. Let’s hope they get even more experimental on their next release.
